Band 6.5

Prompt: A new shopping centre may be built near your home. Write a letter to the local council. In your letter: • explain where you live • describe how you feel about the new shopping centre • suggest what the council should consider before building it (Begin your letter 'Dear Sir or Madam,'. Formal register.)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to share my opinion about the new shopping centre that may be built near my home, which I read about in the local newspaper.

First, I would like to explain where I live. My house is on Green Road, a quiet street very close to the area where the shopping centre is planned. I have lived there for more than ten years with my family.

To be honest, I have mixed feelings about this project. On one hand, a new shopping centre could be useful because it would bring more shops and create jobs for local people. On the other hand, I am worried that it will cause a lot of traffic and noise in our peaceful neighbourhood, which is not good for the families here.

Before building the shopping centre, I think the council should consider a few things. Firstly, you should think about the extra traffic and make a good plan for parking and roads. Secondly, you should consider the noise and pollution and make sure the green spaces are protected.

I hope you will think carefully about these points and listen to local residents.

Yours faithfully, Michael Brown

Band 8.0

Prompt: A new shopping centre may be built near your home. Write a letter to the local council. In your letter: • explain where you live • describe how you feel about the new shopping centre • suggest what the council should consider before building it (Begin your letter 'Dear Sir or Madam,'. Formal register.)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to the recently announced proposal to build a large shopping centre in our area, which I read about in the local press, to share the views of a long-standing resident.

I live at 14 Green Road, a quiet residential street only a few hundred metres from the proposed site. My family and I have made our home here for more than a decade, so we are likely to be directly affected by any development of this scale.

I must admit that my feelings about the project are decidedly mixed. While I appreciate that a new centre could bring welcome amenities and much-needed jobs, I am genuinely concerned about its impact on the character of the neighbourhood, particularly through increased traffic, noise and air pollution.

Before proceeding, I would respectfully urge the council to weigh up several factors. Above all, a thorough traffic assessment should be carried out, along with adequate parking, so that surrounding streets are not overwhelmed. I would also ask that you safeguard the existing green spaces and consult residents throughout the process.

I trust these concerns will be given due consideration, and I would welcome the chance to attend any public meeting.

Yours faithfully, Michael Brown
