Some people think that older workers should be encouraged to leave their jobs so that young people can have more opportunities to work. In my opinion, I mostly disagree with this idea, although I understand why some people support it.
On the one hand, there are some reasons why people believe older employees should retire. Firstly, many young people cannot find a job because the older generation stays in the same positions for a long time. If older workers retire, there will be more free jobs for young people. Secondly, some people think that older employees are slower and do not know about new technology, so younger workers can do the job better and faster.
However, I disagree with this view for several reasons. Firstly, older employees have a lot of experience and knowledge that young people do not have. They can solve difficult problems and they can also teach and help the younger staff. For example, in many companies the older workers train the new employees. Secondly, it is not fair to force people to retire only because of their age. People should be able to work as long as they are healthy and they want to work. Age does not always show how good a worker is.
In conclusion, although encouraging older workers to retire could create some jobs for young people, I believe the disadvantages are bigger. Older employees are valuable because of their experience, and forcing them to retire is unfair. Therefore, I think companies should keep both older and younger workers, because they can work well together and learn from each other.

It is sometimes suggested that ageing employees should be nudged into retirement so that fresh graduates and younger staff can take their place. While this argument has a certain superficial appeal, I largely disagree with it, as it underestimates the value of experienced workers and rests on a flawed view of the labour market.
Those who support the idea typically raise two points. They claim that high youth unemployment is partly caused by older people occupying positions for decades, and that retiring them would free up vacancies. They also assume that younger workers are more adaptable and more comfortable with emerging technologies, and therefore more productive. There is some truth in this, particularly in fast-moving digital industries where skills can quickly become outdated.
Nevertheless, these arguments are far from convincing. Most importantly, older employees possess accumulated expertise, institutional memory and refined judgement that cannot be replicated overnight; they frequently mentor newcomers and stabilise teams during periods of change. Pushing them out would squander this resource and could even harm the very young workers it aims to help. Moreover, the notion that jobs are a fixed quantity is mistaken: a healthy economy creates new roles rather than simply redistributing existing ones, so retaining older staff need not block opportunities for the young. Forcing retirement purely on the basis of age is also discriminatory and demoralising.
In conclusion, although encouraging early retirement might open up a few posts in the short term, I believe the long-term costs clearly outweigh the benefits. A wiser approach is to foster age-diverse workplaces in which the experience of older employees and the energy of younger ones reinforce one another.
