Band 6.0
Prompt: Some people think that governments should invest in public transportation, while others believe that money should be spent on building new roads. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Transport is an important issue in modern cities, and governments have to decide how to spend their limited budget. While some people argue that money should go to public transportation, others believe that building new roads is a better choice. This essay will discuss both opinions before giving my own view.
On the one hand, supporters of public transport point out that buses, trains and metros can move a large number of people at the same time. This reduces the number of private cars on the streets, which means less traffic jams and less air pollution. Furthermore, public transport is usually cheaper, so it helps people who cannot afford a car to travel to work or university.
On the other hand, those who prefer new roads claim that good roads are still necessary because not everyone can use public transport, for example people who live in villages. Better roads can also reduce accidents and make the transport of goods faster, which benefits businesses and the whole economy.
In my opinion, although roads are important, governments should focus more on public transportation. The main reason is that modern cities are becoming very crowded and polluted, and only an efficient public transport system can solve these problems in the long term. Therefore, I believe investing in metros and buses is the wiser decision.
