Prompt: The bar chart below shows the percentage of people in different age groups who held a gym membership in 2023. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The bar chart shows the percentage of people in different age groups who held a gym membership in 2023.
Overall, gym membership was most common among younger adults and became progressively less common with age. The 25–34 group had the highest rate, while people aged 65 and over were the least likely to belong to a gym.
Adults aged 25–34 recorded the highest membership rate at 35%. Those in the youngest bracket, 16–24, were the next most likely to be members, at 28%. Together these two groups clearly stood out from the older age bands.
From the age of 35 onwards, membership declined steadily. Just under a quarter of 35–44 year-olds (24%) held a membership, falling to 18% among those aged 45–54. The rate continued downward to 12% for the 55–64 group and reached its lowest level of only 6% among people aged 65 and above. This means the youngest adults were almost five times more likely to be gym members than the oldest.
