Band 6.5
Prompt: Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?
In recent years, a growing number of people have decided to work for themselves instead of being employed by a company. There are several reasons behind this trend, but it also comes with certain drawbacks, which I will examine in this essay.
There are a few clear reasons why self-employment has become more popular. The most obvious one is freedom: when you are your own boss, you can choose your working hours and you do not have to follow the orders of a manager. The development of the internet has also made this easier, because people can now sell products or offer services online with very little starting money. In addition, some individuals are simply tired of office routine and want to turn their passion into a business.
However, being self-employed is not without disadvantages. Firstly, the income is often unstable, especially at the beginning, and there is no guaranteed monthly salary. Secondly, self-employed people do not usually receive benefits such as paid holidays, sick leave or a pension, which employees normally enjoy. Finally, running a business alone can be stressful, because one person has to deal with everything from finding customers to doing the accounts.
In conclusion, although the desire for independence and the opportunities of technology explain why many people choose self-employment, this path also brings financial insecurity and extra pressure. People should therefore think carefully before leaving a stable job.
