Sample IELTS Task 2 essay: is television a waste of time for children?

Television is a very common form of entertainment for children all over the world. Some people think that watching television is just a waste of time for kids, while others believe that it can be educational. In this essay I will discuss both opinions and give my own view.

On the one hand, many people think that watching television is bad for children. Firstly, when children watch television for many hours, they do not have time for other important activities, such as doing homework, reading books or playing outside. This can be bad for their health because they do not do enough exercise. Secondly, some programmes are not suitable for children, for example programmes with violence, and they can have a bad influence on young minds.

On the other hand, other people believe that television can be educational and useful. There are many programmes that teach children new things, such as documentaries about animals, nature and science. Children can also learn about other countries and cultures that they cannot visit. In addition, some channels help children to learn languages or to improve their general knowledge in an interesting and fun way.

In my opinion, television is not a waste of time if children watch it in the right way. The most important thing is what they watch and how long they watch. If parents choose good programmes and control the time, television can be a helpful tool for learning. However, if children watch too much or watch bad programmes, it becomes a waste of time. In conclusion, I believe television can be either good or bad, and parents play an important role in this.

Television occupies a central place in most children's lives, and opinion is divided over its value. Some regard it as little more than a time-wasting distraction, whereas others see it as a genuine educational resource. In my view, whether television benefits or harms children depends almost entirely on how it is used.

Those who dismiss television as a waste of time make several reasonable points. Hours spent passively in front of a screen inevitably displace more rewarding pursuits such as reading, physical play and face-to-face interaction, contributing to sedentary habits and, in some cases, weight problems. There is also the danger of unsuitable content: programmes featuring violence or crude humour can desensitise impressionable young viewers and shape attitudes their parents would never endorse.

The opposing camp, however, stresses television's considerable educational potential. Well-made documentaries can bring the natural world, history and science vividly to life, exposing children to ideas and places they could never experience directly. Carefully designed programmes can also build vocabulary, foreign-language skills and general knowledge, often making learning more engaging than a textbook ever could. Used thoughtfully, television broadens horizons rather than narrowing them.

My own position is that the medium itself is neutral; what matters is the quality of the content and the amount of viewing. When parents select stimulating programmes, set sensible limits and occasionally watch alongside their children to discuss what they see, television becomes a valuable supplement to a balanced childhood. Left unsupervised and excessive, it can indeed squander precious time. Ultimately, therefore, the responsibility lies with adults to ensure that television enriches children's development instead of detracting from it.
