Sample IELTS Task 2 essay: rich-poor gap problems & solutions

Nowadays, in a lot of countries the difference between rich people and poor people is becoming bigger and bigger. This essay will discuss the problems that this situation causes, and also it will suggest some solutions to solve them.

Firstly, one of the main problems is that poor people cannot get good services. For example, they cannot pay for good education or good hospitals, so their children do not have a good future and they stay poor. This is a big problem because it continues from generation to generation. Another problem is crime. When people are very poor and they see rich people have everything, they sometimes become angry and they do crimes like stealing. This makes the society not safe for everybody.

In terms of solutions, I think the government should do many things. Firstly, the government can take more tax from rich people and companies, and use this money to help poor people. For example, they can build free schools and free hospitals in poor areas. Secondly, the government should create more jobs for poor people, because if they have a job they can earn money and improve their life and support their family. Also, big companies can pay a higher salary to their workers so the difference between the workers and the owners is not so big. In addition, the government can give free training to poor people so they can learn new skills.

In conclusion, the gap between rich and poor causes serious problems like unequal services and more crime. However, I believe that if governments take action by taxing the rich and creating jobs, this problem can be reduced. It is important to do this for a fair society.

In numerous nations, the divide separating the wealthy from the disadvantaged is widening at an alarming rate. This trend generates significant social and economic difficulties, although a combination of targeted policies could meaningfully narrow the gap.

The most damaging consequence is the entrenchment of disadvantage across generations. When low-income families cannot afford quality schooling or healthcare, their children inherit limited opportunities, effectively trapping entire communities in a cycle of poverty. A secondary, and arguably more visible, problem is social instability. Pronounced inequality tends to erode social cohesion, breeding resentment that can manifest as rising crime, political extremism or large-scale unrest, as seen in several countries where austerity has sharpened existing divisions.

Fortunately, these problems are not intractable. The most effective remedy is a progressive taxation system, whereby higher earners and large corporations contribute a fairer share of revenue, which can then be reinvested in public services accessible to all. Crucially, channelling this funding into free education and vocational training equips disadvantaged citizens with the skills needed to compete for better-paid employment, addressing the root cause rather than merely the symptoms. Governments might also legislate for a realistic minimum wage and incentivise businesses to create jobs in deprived regions, ensuring that economic growth benefits society broadly rather than a privileged minority.

In conclusion, although the growing chasm between rich and poor threatens both individual prospects and collective stability, it can be tackled through fairer taxation, generous investment in human capital and deliberate job creation. Ultimately, reducing inequality is not merely a matter of compassion but a prerequisite for a stable and prosperous society.
