Band 7.5

Prompt: Some people think the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others believe there are better alternative ways. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Crime is a serious problem in many societies, and there is an ongoing debate about how it should be tackled. While some people argue that longer prison sentences are the most effective solution, others believe that alternative approaches work better. In my opinion, a combination of both is needed, but prevention should be the priority.

Those who support harsher punishments claim that long sentences deter potential criminals and keep dangerous individuals away from the public. For example, if people know that committing a serious crime will result in many years in prison, they may think twice before breaking the law. In addition, keeping repeat offenders in prison protects communities from further harm.

However, opponents argue that prison alone does not address the root causes of crime, such as poverty, lack of education, and unemployment. They suggest that investing in social programmes, rehabilitation, and job training is more effective in the long term. Countries that focus on rehabilitation often have lower reoffending rates, which shows that helping criminals reintegrate into society can be more beneficial than simply punishing them.

In conclusion, although longer prison sentences may be necessary for the most serious crimes, I believe that tackling the underlying social problems is a more sustainable way to reduce crime. Governments should therefore balance firm punishment with strong prevention and rehabilitation programmes.
