Band 6.5

Prompt: Your neighbour has been making a lot of noise late at night. Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter: describe the problem; explain how it is affecting you; suggest a solution. (Semi-formal register.)

Dear Mr Roberts,

I am writing to you about a problem that I have been having for the last few weeks. I live in the flat just below yours, at number 14, and I am sorry to say that there has been a lot of noise coming from your apartment late at night.

The main problem is loud music and people talking very loudly, usually after eleven o’clock and sometimes until two in the morning. I think you may be having parties or visitors quite often, and the sound comes through the floor very easily in this building.

This situation is affecting me a lot. I have to get up early every day because I start work at seven o’clock, so I really need to sleep at night. Because of the noise, I am very tired during the day and it is difficult for me to concentrate at my job. My young daughter is also waking up.

I would like to suggest a simple solution. Maybe you could turn the music down after ten or eleven o’clock, or use headphones in the late evening. If you are planning a party, it would also help if you could tell me before.

I hope we can solve this problem in a friendly way. Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards, James Miller

Band 8.0

Prompt: Your neighbour has been making a lot of noise late at night. Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter: describe the problem; explain how it is affecting you; suggest a solution. (Semi-formal register.)

Dear Mr Roberts,

I hope you are well. I am writing to raise a rather delicate issue that has been troubling me over the past few weeks, in the hope that we can sort it out amicably between us.

I live directly below you, in flat 14, and I have noticed that there is often a considerable amount of noise coming from your apartment late in the evening. It usually takes the form of loud music and lively conversation, frequently continuing well past midnight. As you may know, sound travels surprisingly easily through the floors in this building, so even ordinary gatherings can be quite disruptive downstairs.

Unfortunately, this has begun to take a real toll on me. I start work at seven each morning, so an undisturbed night’s sleep is essential, and the late-night noise has left me exhausted and unable to concentrate properly during the day. My young daughter has also been waking up, which is upsetting for the whole household.

I am certainly not asking you to give up your social life, but I wonder whether you might be willing to keep the volume down after around eleven o’clock, perhaps using headphones for music. A quick word in advance of any larger gatherings would also be hugely appreciated.

Thank you very much for understanding, and please do let me know if you would like to discuss this in person.

Best regards, James Miller
