Band 6.5

Prompt: You have decided to leave your current job to study full-time. Write a letter to your employer. In your letter: inform them of your decision; explain your reasons; thank them for the opportunities you have had. (Formal register.)

Dear Mr Anderson,

I am writing to inform you that I have decided to leave my position at your company. This letter is my official notice, and my last working day will be the 30th of June, which gives one month’s notice as my contract requires.

I have made this decision because I want to go back to university and study full-time. I have been accepted onto a master’s degree in computer science, and the course starts in September. Unfortunately, it is a full-time programme during the day, so it is not possible for me to study and continue working at the same time. This was a difficult decision, but I believe it is the right choice for my future career.

I would like to thank you very much for all the opportunities I have had during my three years here. I have learned a lot of useful skills and I really enjoyed working with my colleagues. The training and support you gave me helped me to grow as a professional, and I am very grateful for that.

Of course, I will do my best in my final weeks. I am happy to finish my current projects and help to train the person who will take my place.

Thank you again for everything. I hope we can keep in touch in the future.

Yours sincerely, Emily Chen

Prompt: You have decided to leave your current job to study full-time. Write a letter to your employer. In your letter: inform them of your decision; explain your reasons; thank them for the opportunities you have had. (Formal register.)

Dear Mr Anderson,

I am writing to formally notify you of my decision to resign from my position as software developer. In line with the terms of my contract, I am giving one month’s notice, which means my final working day will be 30th June.

My reason for leaving is that I have been offered a place on a full-time master’s programme in computer science, beginning this September. As the course runs during the day, it is simply not feasible to combine it with my current responsibilities, and after a great deal of thought I have concluded that this is the right moment to invest in my long-term development. I can assure you that the decision had nothing to do with any dissatisfaction with the role itself.

Indeed, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for the many opportunities I have been given over the past three years. The challenging projects, the ongoing training and the support of an outstanding team have helped me grow enormously, both technically and professionally, and I will always look back on my time here with real gratitude.

Naturally, I am committed to ensuring a smooth handover. I am happy to complete my outstanding work and to help train whoever takes over my responsibilities.

Thank you once again for everything, and I very much hope we can stay in touch.

Yours sincerely, Emily Chen
