GT letter — faulty product complaint
GT Task 1 sample letters complaining about a faulty product — model answers from band 6 to band 8.
Band 7.0
Prompt: You recently bought a piece of equipment for your home but it did not work. Write a letter to the shop where you bought it. In your letter: describe the product you bought; explain what is wrong with it; say what you want the shop to do.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you about a problem with a product I recently purchased from your shop. Last week, I bought an electric kettle from your store on Market Street. It was a silver-coloured kettle, model number KT-450, and I paid around fifty dollars for it.
Unfortunately, when I brought it home and tried to use it, I discovered that it is not working properly. When I switch it on, the kettle does not heat the water at all. Also, there is a strange burning smell coming from the bottom of the kettle, which I think could be dangerous. I have checked the plug and the socket, and both are working fine, so the problem is definitely with the kettle itself.
I would like to ask you to either replace the kettle with a new one or give me a full refund. I still have the receipt and the original box, so I hope this will not be a problem.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully, James Carter
Band 8.0
Prompt: You recently bought a piece of equipment for your home but it did not work. Write a letter to the shop where you bought it. In your letter: describe the product you bought; explain what is wrong with it; say what you want the shop to do.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with a product I purchased from your store last week and to request an appropriate resolution to the matter.
On 14 July, I bought a Delonghi ECO310 espresso machine from your Westfield branch, priced at £189.99. The receipt number is 47823, which I am happy to provide as proof of purchase should it be required.
Unfortunately, the appliance has proved entirely non-functional since I brought it home. Upon pressing the power button, the machine emits a loud clicking sound before shutting itself off immediately. No coffee can be produced, and the pressure gauge needle does not move at all. I have followed the setup instructions precisely and verified that the voltage supply is correct, so I am confident the fault lies with the machine itself rather than with user error.
I would be grateful if you could arrange either a full refund or a direct replacement at your earliest convenience. I am available to visit the store any weekday after 5 p.m. and can bring both the machine and the original receipt.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully, Martin Clarke
